Quickly, the whole community began to desire the wonderful orange gems, mining it exclusively, with some dwarves mining for weeks until they dropped dead on the spot. After a few months of feverish mining, the vein ran dry. Soon after, the desire to posses all the beautiful gems became overwhelming, with dwarves turning on each other. Some quickly found out that they could go without food or rest if they had enough of the gems with them. Wounds that would normally heal naturally, however, didn't heal. Eventually, there were but a few survivors who had created barriers of traps to ward out others. Mostly, they would spend the whole day staring into the beautiful gems.
